Learning and development

The importance of play!

Play is fundamental to how children learn and develop. Plaxtol Kids provides children with plentiful opportunities and resources to play, inside and outside. There is a mixture of child initiated play, and adult initiated activities. If they need it, children are also given space and comfort to wind down after a busy day at school or nursery. Plaxtol Kids takes children on outings and trips, including:

  • Woodland and field walks

  • Play parks

  • Ightham Mote, Knole Park, and Haysden Park

  • Kent Firefighting Museum

  • Pepenbury

  • Coolings Nature Trail

  • Local airports

Learning and development

Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self assured. Plaxtol Kids observes each child's development, assesses progress and plans next steps. For children aged up to 5 years, the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is used. For school age children, the National Curriculum (Key Stage 1 and 2) is considered. Here are some examples of things children may do:

All of these activities and resources help children learn and develop. For example, growing vegetables teaches children about the world around them. Cooking helps children learn about weight and measures (mathematics), follow instructions and take turns (personal, social and emotional development).  Listening to stories encourages attention, understanding and speaking (communication and language).  Junk modelling helps children explore different media and materials (expressive arts and design).
